A 5 ATM or “50-meter” smartwatch is not permission to dive 50 meters. Water-resistance ratings describe standardized pressure tests and manufacturer-approved activities, not a universal safe depth. Real use adds movement, impacts, hot water, soap, salt, aging seals, and button operation. Always follow the exact watch manual.
Water-resistant is not waterproof
“Waterproof” suggests water can never enter, which no wearable manufacturer can guarantee indefinitely. Water resistance depends on seals, adhesives, case condition, crown and button design, temperature, and pressure. It can diminish with age, impacts, repairs, and chemical exposure.
A watch that survived yesterday’s pool session can still fail after a cracked crystal or damaged seal. Inspect it before water use and use manufacturer testing services when available.
ATM ratings
ATM refers to atmospheres of pressure in a laboratory test. Common watch ratings include:

Why 50 meters does not mean a 50-meter dive
Laboratory ratings apply controlled static pressure under specified conditions. A swimmer moving an arm, hitting a wall, jumping into water, or receiving a jet creates changing local pressure. Temperature, soap, and worn seals differ from the test.
Manufacturers therefore associate 5 ATM with swimming rather than descending to 50 meters. Diving requires purpose-designed controls, depth sensing, decompression software where applicable, and a relevant standard such as EN 13319.
ISO 22810
ISO 22810 covers water-resistant watches and testing terminology. Apple states Series 2 and later carry 50-meter water resistance under ISO 22810:2010, while Ultra models carry 100 meters. Apple authorizes standard models for shallow-water activities and restricts scuba and high-velocity water unless using specified Ultra hardware.
An ISO claim does not make every band water resistant. Leather, metal, woven, or specialty bands may be unsuitable even when the case can swim.
EN 13319 and dive watches
EN 13319 addresses diving accessories such as depth gauges and combined depth-and-time devices. Apple Watch Ultra 3 and Garmin Fenix 8 include specified recreational dive capabilities under manufacturer limits. Ultra 3 is rated for recreational diving to 40 meters with compatible software; Fenix 8 has a stated 4 ATM dive rating and a depth sensor designed around 40 meters.
A smartwatch dive app may require a subscription, region support, training, and a backup. Never exceed the exact hardware, software, gas, and certification limits.
IP ratings
Ingress Protection codes describe dust and water tests. IPX7 generally means temporary immersion under defined laboratory conditions; IP68 uses manufacturer-specified conditions beyond the baseline standard. 10 ATM watches
Garmin Fenix, Instinct, and selected outdoor watches use 10 ATM ratings. This adds pressure margin for swimming and demanding water exposure, but does not alone supply a dive computer. Fenix 8 adds separate dive design and software; Instinct 3’s 10 ATM rating does not make it identical.
High-speed impacts can exceed static pressure expectations. Confirm surfing, wakeboarding, or waterskiing permission by model.
Apple Watch water lock
Water Lock prevents accidental screen touches and ejects water from the speaker when disabled. It does not mechanically seal a damaged case or increase the water-resistance rating. Forgetting Water Lock does not by itself remove the case rating, but touch input may behave unpredictably.

Soap and shampoo reduce surface tension and can penetrate seals differently from plain water. Heat expands materials, steam reaches small spaces, and hot tubs add chemicals. Manufacturer advice varies by watch generation.
Even if a brand permits showering, removing the watch protects skin and allows charging. Saunas and steam rooms commonly exceed operating-temperature guidance and should be avoided unless explicitly approved.
Temperature and pressure changes
Moving rapidly from hot water to cold water stresses seals through expansion and contraction. Very cold water can reduce battery performance, while high heat damages batteries and adhesives. Dive watches list underwater operating ranges for a reason.
Stay within the published temperature range. A water rating is not a thermal rating.
Bands matter
Silicone, fluoroelastomer, and purpose-built ocean bands dry quickly and resist water. Nylon absorbs water but may remain secure. Leather and selected metal or fine-woven bands can degrade or irritate skin after soaking.

A temporary fog after temperature change still deserves attention if it persists. Charging a wet or compromised device can be dangerous.
Before swimming checklist
Confirm the rating and permitted activity, inspect case and crystal, use a water-suitable band, check battery, configure pool length or GPS, enable Water Lock where relevant, and learn controls. Afterward, rinse as permitted, dry the case and skin, and inspect again.
For open water, add a buddy, visibility, weather assessment, and a tow float where suitable. A watch is not a flotation or rescue device.
Choosing a rating
